About My Art

My art is an extension of my inner emotions, personality, experience and soul.  Often, I will go for months without picking up a brush.  Nonetheless, I have found this time is not spent idle.  My mind is constantly gathering snippets of information sights, sound, smells, emotions that are filed away in my mind’s eye and eventually they reach a critical Mass.  These bits of information can be as simple as a perfect sunflower that I grew in my backyard this past Summer or the sound and smell of burning rubber, as I slam on my brakes to avoid an accident or the feelings of helplessness when I experienced the sad look on my daughter’s face as she grieved the death of her pet mouse Lucy.  I am fascinated by anything strange or unusual.  My eyes are naturally drawn to intense color or texture.  Often, I will collect interesting objects ... an old rusty license plate, a dry seedpod, a scrap of twisted metal, or an old vintage photograph.  It may take days, months or even years but eventually they will be incorporated into a future work of art. It is difficult to say exactly what will inspire me and eventually become part of a piece of art.  To the casual observer my art seems spontaneous. However, I work at a feverish pace because I have already consciously or subconsciously worked out much of the detail in my mind’s eye.  I will frequently start and finish a painting or sculpture in a single sitting.  For me the creative process causes an unbearable itch that only painting or sculpting can reach and soothe.  I keep scratching (painting/sculpting) until the itch goes away then, the cycle starts all over again.
